Red Kite is 4!

This week marks Red Kite Creative's fouth birthday (technically, it's the fourth anniversary of my joyous separation from my previous employer). To all clients, colleagues and friends, a big "thank you" for your support and patronage.

Red Kite has recently been expanding its list of services by partnering with other independent developers both in Colorado and elsewhere - this is our way of growing the business without adding to the bottom line. We hope we can serve you soon with more custom programming and improved CMS capabilities, including Drupal, Joomla and Javascript-based website enhancements.

An example is our recent tool to help a client attractively display the contents of a membership spreadsheet on their website; the client can update their membership list at any time and the display will change instantly. Easy for the client and useful for their visiting members as it also includes a search function.

Website Backups

Even the most popular, carefully monitored sites occasionally have host server problems - it can happen to anyone. If you're making regular content updates to your website (and of course you are, because that's what Google likes), when is the last time you backed up your website and database?

If you're not sure how to do this, drop us a line and we'll help you if you're using our hosting services. Better safe than sorry.

Content Management, Jr.

If you already have a website but don't know how to make changes or add new content to it, there's a way around that. There are a few content management systems (CMS) that can be added to existing sites very easily. They'll provide you with an administration page, a website where you can login and edit your own pages just like you would edit or write in Word.

Red Kite uses Kawari, which can be installed on a 10-page site and be ready to go in about a 1/2 hour. Kawari is pretty easy to use on the administration side too.

A new micro-CMS called Perch was released just this week. I haven't used it yet, but it looks really nice - very user-friendly on the admin side and just as easy to install as Kawari. Perch requires a one-time license fee of about $50.

So if you want to update your own site but don't need to invest in a full-size CMS, one of these smaller systems might be just the right fit. If you have questions, we'll be happy to answer them. Just send us an email.
